Since this is 22-gauge wire, it is slightly thinner than 18-gauge wire. Both 22-gauge wire and 18-gauge wire are used very frequently in low-voltage projects. The advantage to using the thinner 22-gauge cabling is that it will be slightly more flexible, and some installers find that it is easier to work with. The downside is that 22-gauge cabling cannot be used in as long of wire runs, as it loses electrical current more quickly.

As this is 4-conductor cabling, there are four (4) inside wires. The insulation colors are red, black, white, and green.
