For anyone needing just a little bit of wiring to finish a project, this 15-foot length of Genesis 22-Gauge, 4-Conductor (22/4) Wire can be a great option. Genesis Unshielded and Stranded Cabling is easy and forgiving to work with. It is recommended for both new and experienced installers.
Installers of all types use Genesis Wire in their low-voltage projects each and every day. Resideo owns the Genesis brand, so you can count on it as a high-quality and dependable project. Despite it being owned by Resideo, the wiring is great for use with alarm systems and sensors from virtually any manufacturer. You will enjoy working with this wiring and the excellent ease of use that it provides.
One important thing to consider about this wiring is its thickness. This is 22-gauge wire, which is slightly thinner than the 18-gauge wire that is also frequently used with alarm systems. By going with the thinner wire, you will find that the cabling is a bit more flexible and will fit more easily under smaller screw terminals. Some installers say that this gauge wire is easier for them to maneuver and work with. The trade-off though is that 22-gauge wire cannot be used in longer wire runs in order to power devices, as it loses electrical current faster than thicker 18-gauge wire.
The term "4-Conductor" means that there are four (4) smaller wires inside each cable. The insulation colors for these individual wires are red, black, white, and green. It is advised that you use 22-4 wire with devices needing a 4-wire connection. Examples of security system hardware that uses a 4-wire connection include most keypads, most communicators, and powered sensors like motion detectors and glass breaks. This wiring is made from copper, a material suitable for data and power transmissions alike.
Lastly, it is important to note that this is stranded cabling, not solid core cabling. When you say that cabling is "stranded", it means that each individual conductor wire is split up further into multiple strands. By doing this, the wire becomes more flexible and more forgiving. Even if a few wire strands break off, the connection should still work as intended. This is different for solid core wiring, as it is more prone to breaking off and splitting. We have found that most installers prefer the stranded wiring, especially those who may not work with cabling regularly.
Note that we also offer 500-foot boxes and 1,000-foot boxes of 22-4 wiring if you need a larger quantity.
