Wireless Repeater: Use With Life Safety Devices

[AUDIO LOGO] Hey, DIYers. Dylan here with Alarm Grid. Today we're going to go over-- can I use life safety sensors with my wireless repeater? The answer essentially is yes, you can. So there's two types of repeaters that are mainly used with the systems that we support. First is going to be the 5800RP, that's going to be used with wireless Honeywell 5800 series sensors. And we also have the PG9920, that's going to be used with PowerG wireless sensors. So life safety sensors mainly consist of smoke detectors, heat sensors, and carbon sensors. And the repeaters, it's simply just going to pick up the signal and then boost that signal. So if a sensor is a little bit too far from the panel and you're getting communication errors on the panel for that sensor, you're going to add the repeater, help boost that signal, and then strengthen that connection. The main thing that you're going to want to focus on if you're doing an installation where you want to focus on UL listings, the Honeywell option is listed for residential and commercial burglary UL listings, but not fire listings, which is pretty much what the life safety sensors are. It's going to be for the fire. The PG9920, that's going to work with burglary or fire. It's listed for UL for each of those. And if you're installing one of these, if you check the installation guide, that's going to go over the specific UL codes there. So you can check and confirm if that is something that you need to focus on during your installation. OK. So for the Honeywell sensors, those usually have a range of about 200 feet. So if you're adding a repeater for that, it's going to double it to about 400 feet. The PowerG sensors, those have a much larger range by default of about 2,000 feet. So normally, you don't really even need a repeater for these. But if you do, again, it's going to double that signal strength to about 4,000 feet. One thing to take note of is that a sensor cannot be-- cannot have its signal repeated twice. So if you have a sensor and you have a repeater set up between it and the system, and say you have another repeater, both repeaters are not going to pick up that signal and boost it, only one of the repeaters is. So that's just something to keep in mind while you're doing the installation. A signal can only-- a sensor can only have its signal repeated once by one of these devices. OK, so that was just a brief explanation of repeaters being used with life safety sensors. Again, you can use them. You're just going to want to focus on the UL listings if that's something that's important to you while you're doing your installation. And if you just check the installation guide for either device, it's going to show you all the specific UL codes there.
