Description

Genesis 22-gauge, 4-conductor stranded cable is good for a wide range of applications. With 4-conductors, it is perfect for connecting powered devices to an alarm system. This includes motion sensors, glass break detectors, and smoke detectors. Stranded wire offers superior flexibility.

Wire size is rated using the American Wire Gauge (AWG). In AWG, the smaller the number, the larger the wire diameter. So 18AWG is a larger wire conductor than 22 AWG. When you see wire described as 22/4, it means that the product has an outer sheath, in this instance green in color, with four (4) individually coated conductors running inside of it, and each of those conductors, or wires is 22AWG in size.

Additionally, the coating on each of the individual wires is usually, as in this case, color-coded. One conductor is coated in red, another in black, a third in green, and a fourth in white. This helps with managing connections on long wire runs. As a rule, when it comes to low-voltage powered devices black connects to the negative (-) for power, red connects to the positive (+), and green and white provide the connection for zone wiring.

In addition to AWG and conductor number, bulk wire also comes in either shielded or unshielded forms. This product is unshielded. Shielded wire has an additional layer of metal, usually braided, that runs between the outer sheath and the inner wire conductors. Shielding helps to prevent electronic interference into, or out of, a particular wire run. In alarm systems, unshielded wire is nearly always recommended, except in special circumstances. Shielded wire is more expensive, and its capacitive effect can seriously limit the recommended length of wire runs.

Another variation when it comes to wire is stranded or solid. This is stranded wire. That means that rather than a single piece of copper inside each of these conductors, many small strands of copper come together to form the 22 AWG wire in this box. Stranded wire is more flexible, has a greater bend capability, and is less likely to break after bending. We recommend stranded wire for any application where it is not prohibited by standards or regulations.
