Honeywell 959
XTP Overhead Door Contact
Description
The Honeywell 959 is an overhead door contact from Honeywell’s XTP series of commercial contacts. Just like all XTP contacts, the 959 can withstand power surges up to 2400VDC. As the 959 is a commercial contact, you will install the device in areas that are more prone to lightning strikes or power surges. If the contact did not have the XTP surge protection, a nearby lightning strike could easily fuse the internal contact of the device so that when the magnet is moved away from the contact, an alarm is not activated. This can be a serious problem because you may not realize your contact absorbed a lightning strike and therefore your garage or warehouse will be unprotected. Assuming your property is protected when it isn’t, is worse than not protecting your property at all. If you use an XTP contact like the Honeywell 959, you never have to wonder if your property is truly protected.
The 959 overhead door contact includes an adjustable magnet mounted on an L bracket and a reed switch contact. The L bracket should be mounted in the bottom corner of your overhead door. The contact should be mounted on the floor of your garage or warehouse. As the Honeywell 959 has a wide gap of 2”, you must ensure that when the overhead door is closed that the contact and magnet are within 2” of each other. As soon as the magnet is moved further away than 2” from the contact, an alarm is activated.
The Honeywell XTP overhead door contact has soft cured epoxy that protects the internal contact from moisture or corrosion. The epoxy seal also protects the 959 contact from damage from impact as well. The contact has 24” terminals leads which are encased in an armored cable to protect the wiring. As garages and warehouse have lots of traffic and are filled with sharp things, it is important that the wire connections are protected from someone inadvertently cutting the wires. The overhead door contact itself has a rating of 100mA at 28VDC and uses a Form A, SPST, normally closed internal reed switch. The Honeywell 959 can also withstand temperatures between -40° F and 194° F so that it will work in the harshest of environments.
