In this video, Jarrett shows users how to test the Honeywell 5808W3 when used with a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus. This smoke and heat detector has a test button for easily testing the device. You can also test the device by using canned smoke and a hair dryer to test the device's heat detection function.
Remember that you must place your system on test mode with the central station before attempting to test the 5808W3. If you fail to do this, then you will cause a false alarm, and your local fire department will be very disappointed. The best way to put your system on test mode is to contact your alarm monitoring company or to contact the associated central station directly. The easiest way to test the sensor is to use the test button. This is a recessed button, and you will need a thin object like a small screwdriver to press the button. But if you want to test the actual functionality of the device, you will need to use canned smoke and a hair dryer.
When testing your 5808W3 on Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus, you will be causing an alarm on the system. This will activate the system's sounder, and it will be loud. There will be a button you can press to silence the alarm. However, if you want to clear the alarm entirely, you will need to provide a valid code. We recommend providing your Master Code, which is usually the code you use to arm and disarm. The Honeywell 5808W3 can only be used with the 345 MHz version of the IQ Panel 2 Plus. It will not work with the 319.5 MHz or 433 MHz versions. Fortunately, there are wireless 319.5 MHz smoke detectors and wireless 433 MHz smoke detectors available if you have one of those systems. Assuming that you have a compatible system, you will be able to auto-enroll it. This is done by putting the panel in to its wireless enrollment mode and then activating the sensor.

[SLAM] Hey, DIYers. Jarret with Alarm Grid here. Today, we're going to be discussing how you would test the Honeywell 5808W3 with the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus. Now, the 5808W3, it is able to be tested with two different methods. You can either test it by using the test button, which is actually located directly in the front of the smoke detector. Or you can use a thing of canned smoke or a hairdryer to be able to test the heat detection on the system. Now, of course, if you ever did want to run any tests with these smoke detectors before any alarm system or the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus in general, you want to make sure that your account or your system is in test mode before you do so, so that you do avoid any type of false alarms or any type of issues when it comes to any fees that may follow a false alarm or anything like that. Now, because this is a fire safety device, you do want to make sure that you are testing the smoke detector at least twice a year to make sure that everything is working correctly. So when you are performing the different tests for the smoke detector, there's going to be two different types of tests that you can perform. There's either the transmission path test, which is by basically pressing the test button located at the front of the smoke detector. Or by triggering a functional test, which is basically activating the actual sensor that's inside of the smoke detector. And that'll be done by either using the canned smoke or using the hairdryer to be able to activate the sensor. Now, if either of those tests fail, then your best option is to either try to troubleshoot that smoke detector to make sure that you can get it to work. And if not, then you would have to replace it with the new one. Again, you do want to perform these test at least two times a year so that you can make sure this is functioning correctly. Now, if you are enrolling the 5808W3 into your Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus, you definitely want to make sure that the Qolsys panel you have is the correct version. You have to make sure that your Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus supports legacy 345 megahertz. That is because the Honeywell sensors or the 5808W3, it does only support 345 megahertz to communicate. But if you do have that type of system, by all means that works perfect. Now, of course, before you do any of these tests, you 100% have to make sure that your system is in test mode first. So that you make sure that you avoid any type of issues with setting off false alarms or maybe even being fined for accidentally setting off a false alarm. So to avoid all this, definitely put your system in test mode. Now, if you ever wanted to put your system in test mode, you can either call your monitoring company and have them place the system in test mode for you. Or you can call the central monitoring station themselves and have them place your system in test mode as well. And if you were an Alarm Grid customer, you can put the system in test mode yourself by going or by using the MyAlarms.com feature. Now, when you are performing the test, obviously the first test you going to perform is by checking the transmission path. That is by pressing the test button at the front of the sensor. So performing the transmission path test is basically just ensuring that the sensor is properly communicating with the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus. It's also going to make sure that all the LEDs are working and that the siren is working as well. So when you're initially starting this test, again you 100% want to put your system in the test mode, and that is by calling your central station, your central monitoring station directly, or you can call your monitoring company. Or again, if you were an Alarm Grid customer, you can use the MyAlarms.com feature. Once you have successfully put the system in a test mode, then you perform the second step, which is basically pressing this test button. So what you'll do is-- what you'll need is basically a small thin object like a screwdriver or maybe like a big pair tweezers or a toothpick. Something that can go into this little hole and you can press it down for at least five seconds. And once you're holding down that button, it is going to trigger the alarm on the system if you do have it enrolled correctly. Now, if you don't have enrolled correctly, then it's not going to set off the alarm and at that point you'll know that it has not properly enrolled. And then, the third step is just basically making sure that it's working. Once it has triggered the alarm, then you can just disarm the system by using the master code. Now, we're going to test. So as I said, what you're going to do is you're going to basically take a screwdriver, and you're going to press the test button for about five seconds. And it's going to trigger the alarm on the Qolsys panel. [BEEP] So we have just successfully tested the transmission path test that just ensured that the system is correctly enrolled into the alarm system. So now, we have done the first initial test for the 5808W3. Now, the second test is a functional test. So basically what we're going to be doing is using the canned smoke, and also if you wanted to use a hairdryer, you can do that as well. But as I said, then you first have to put the system into test mode again or just make sure that it still is in test mode. So again, if you wanted to call the central monitoring station or the alarm company, you can definitely do all that. And then, when you are ready to perform the functional test, what you'll do is for the first test you'd use the canned smoke. Basically using the can smoke is just ensuring that if there was ever any smoke going or if there was smoke going through the smoke detector, it will trigger the alarm. And then, the second test is by using a hairdryer. Now, for this video we're not going to be using a hairdryer, because we don't have one on hand to be able to test it. But using the hairdryer is basically just making sure that the heat sensor is working for this smoke detector. So if you wanted to use the hairdryer, what you'll do is you'll look for this round hole right here. It's going to be bigger than the test button. It's actually going to be the opposite side of the test button. And what you do is you'll take the hairdryer, and you'll put it basically in full heat. And you're going to direct it towards this hole, and you're going to let the heat go into there. And once this sensor picks up about 135 degrees Fahrenheit, it's going to trigger the alarm. And at least you'll know at that point that the heat detection is working. And of course, once that's done, you'll just disarm the system by using the master code. But for this video, we are going to test the smoke detector by using the canned smoke. So now, we're going to test out the canned smoke. So what you definitely want to do is make sure that the smoke is going directly into the vents of the smoke detector. [SPRAY] And sometimes it can take a little bit to the trigger the alarm, so just give it a little second. [BEEP] So as you can see, we have successfully set off the alarm, or we've triggered the alarm on the smoke detector by using the canned smoke. And that is how you test the 5808W3 on the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus.
