Wired Ceiling-Mount Motion Detector

The coverage pattern offered from a ceiling mount motion sensor is sometimes preferable when compared with the coverage pattern of a standard motion sensor. A typical motion sensor will look outward and scan the entirety of the room for any activity. These motion sensors are normally corner mounted or flat mounted on a wall for optimal coverage. Ceiling mount motion sensors use a different detection pattern and are mounted differently.

As the name implies a ceiling mount motion sensor will look downward, and it is best-suited for placement on the ceiling. These devices look downward with a 360 degree coverage area. This is why ceiling mount motion detectors are also sometimes referred to as 360 degree motion sensor. By placing the device on the ceiling, it will detect any motion directly below.

Ceiling mount motion detectors are great for placing directly above entryways that intruders will need to walk past in order to enter the room. The area not within the sensor's field of view will not respond to motion. This way, you can leave a portion of the room unmonitored. This can be a very good idea for potentially reducing false alarms, especially if something on the other side of the room is prone to cause false alarms.

In terms of pure detection method, ceiling mount motion sensors are virtually no different from typical passive infrared (PIR ) motion detection sensors. Both types look for changes in infrared energy that occur with movement. This can be the result of any person, pet or large object coming within the sensor's field of view. The way that ceiling mount motion sensors differ is based on their detection pattern.

When using a ceiling mount motion sensor, the device will normally need to be mounted from a height of between 8 and 12 feet up. This will give the device the best possible performance. By raising the sensor, you can increase the diameter of its detection area. But placing it too high can prevent the sensor from detecting the activity below, as the detection signals can only travel so far. You should check the manual for your ceiling mount motion sensor to determine the recommended mounting height.

The ceiling mount motion sensors listed here are all hardwired devices. They must connect directly with a panel or a wired to wireless converter.
