Alarm.com ADC-SVR210 Vs. ADC-SVR122

Alarm.com recently released the ADC-SVR210 stream video recorder. The older ADC-SVR122 and ADC-SVR100 have been discontinued. These smaller streaming video recorders are perfect for residential or light commercial use. In this FAQ, we will compare features of the ADC-SVR210 with the ADC-SVR122.

Below is the ADC-SVR210 Stream Video Recorder. Its dimensions are 7.7" W x 7.9" D x 5.5" H (14.5cm x 20cm x 13.9cm):

An Alarm.com stream video recorder (SVR) works in conjunction with Alarm.com, and in some cases, third-party cameras. It stores video captured by the camera system. The SVR has a hard drive, to store video for live viewing and later retrieval. Stored video can also be uploaded to the end-user through the Alarm.com app. An SVR allows an Alarm.com user to record video 24/7, rather than simply capturing clips based on video analytics rules.

On an Alarm.com video account that doesn't include an SVR, there are monthly clip limits. Limits are necessary because all of the clips a customer chooses to upload to Alarm.com are saved on their servers. If they allowed every customer to upload unlimited clips, it would be difficult to keep up with the hard drive storage requirements. By incorporating an SVR into your camera network, you're removing that storage burden from Alarm.com and placing it on your own equipment.

Alarm.com has offered some of their stream video recorders without a hard drive, allowing the customer to purchase a hard drive separately, potentially saving money. In particular the ADC-CSVR2016P and the ADC-CSVR2000P commercial stream video recorders offer this option. In this case, the ADC-SVR210 comes with either a 1TB or a 2TB hard drive included. Just choose the capacity you require at checkout.

The ADC-SVR210 is compatible with Western Digital Purple Surveillance hard drives that are 3.5" and either 1TB or 2TB in capacity. These hard drives are made specifically for the rigors of video storage, playback, and overwriting. The ADC-SVR210 only has one (1) drive bay, so if you plan to have a multi-camera setup, it may be a good idea to go for the largest storage option available. In this case, the 2TB hard drive option.

To use third-party cameras with the ADC-SVR210 the cameras must meet these requirements:

  • Supported Communication Protocols: Onvif Profile S or VAPIX user enabled.
  • IP Protocol: DHCP (Static IPs are not supported.)
  • Compression: H.264.
  • Network Connection: Wired Ethernet.

Per the ONVIF website, "ONVIF is a leading and well-recognized industry forum whose mission is to provide and promote standardized interfaces for effective interoperability of IP-based physical security products." The forum operates in a similar manner to the Z-Wave Alliance. Some member companies you may recognize include Honeywell, HIKVision, Canon, Bosch, Intel, Johnson Controls, and the list goes on.

ONVIF stands for Open Network Video Interface Forum. This is a security standard that ensures devices from different manufacturers can work together. To confirm compatibility, they use profiles. Each profile has a fixed set of features that every conformant device must adhere to. A device may support more than one profile. You can see the specifications for Profile S here.

VAPIX is an API (Application Programming Interface) for Axis Communications' camera products. The VAPIX API allows Axis cameras to integrate with a wide range of products on different platforms. It is notable that Axis Communications is a member of ONVIF.
