Can I Use a 3GL GSM on a Honeywell L5100?
The Honeywell 3GL GSM cellular communicator is compatible with the Lynx Touch L5200, L5210 and L7000 series control panels, but will not work with the Lynx Touch L5100. The GSMVLP5-4G cellular communicator is the compatible 4G cellular communicator for the Lynx Touch L5100 control panel.
When the 3GL was first released, it was called the 4GL, and was marketed as a 4G/3G/2G communicator. Competitors and customers cried foul, arguing that it wasn't truly a 4G unit, and Honeywell responded by changing the name to 3GL, with no physical changes to the unit. At the time the 2G network was still available. Unlike the 3GL, which now can only use the 3G network since the sunset of 2G service, the GSMVLP5-4G, has the ability to choose between the 4G and 3G cellular network, depending on which has the stronger signal strength.
Pairing a GSMVLP5-4G with a Lynx Touch L5100 control panel allows users to eliminate a land line and communicate alarm signals wirelessly to AlarmNet servers. AlarmNet servers forward the signals received to a central monitoring station and Total Connect 2.0. Users no longer need to be concerned that a burglar will cut the phone line and remove communication for the alarm system.
The GSMVLP5-4G supports Advanced Protection Logic (APL). With APL enabled, the panel sends a signal to a central monitoring station immediately if the Lynx Touch L5100 control panel is tampered with any time during the entry delay time and the panel is not disarmed using a valid code. Some users refer to this feature as smash and grab.
In addition to eliminating a landline, another benefit to installing a GSMVLP5-4G cellular communication is the ability to connect to Total Connect 2.0.
Total Connect 2.0 is an app that allows users to control a Honeywell alarm system, home automation and video surveillance from any computer, smartphone and iOS device. Users will receive notifications via email and or text message on enabled alarm signals and events.
Users can also install a L5100-WIFI module for dual path communication. The WIFI path will always be used, when available, and if the internet is lost for any reason, the GSMVLP5-4G will take over and continue communication for the Lynx Touch L5100 system
