Honeywell 5800MINI vs Honeywell 5816OD
The Honeywell 5800 MINI and the Honeywell 5816OD are two wireless door and window contacts from the Honeywell 5800 Series. The biggest difference between the two is their recommended placement area. The 5800MINI is for indoor use only, but the 5816OD is weatherproof and can be used outside.
In terms of functionality, these two sensors are actually very similar. Both devices consist of a sensor and a magnet. The sensor is placed on the frame of the door or window. The magnet is placed on the door or window itself, within about a half inch of the sensor. When the door or window is opened, the magnet will separate from the sensor. This will activate an internal reed switch inside the sensor. When this happens, the sensor will send a signal to the security system to let it know about the open door or window. Both devices can operate at a maximum distance of roughly 200 feet away from the receiver. Also, both devices communicate at a frequency of 345 MHz. This means that they can both be used with any Honeywell or 2GIG panel that includes a working wireless receiver.
That said, these sensor are very different in terms of where they should be placed. The 5800MINI is an indoor sensor. It is not weatherproof, and it can become damaged by exposure to moisture and fine particles. The operating temperature specs for the 5800MINI are 32 - 120 degrees Fahrenheit (0 - 48 degrees Celsius). This means that it is only suitable for doors and windows located indoors. Meanwhile, the 5816OD is an outdoor sensor. It is weatherproof and resistant to moisture. Its protective casing prevents it from being damaged by rain, dust and other hazardous conditions. While it can be placed indoors, the sensor is specifically designed to be used outside. This makes it best used on structures like fences, patio doors, barns and sheds. The 5816OD is also capable of withstanding extreme temperatures of -40 - +150 degrees Fahrenheit (-40 - +66 degrees Celsius).
The two sensors also differ in terms of some minor features. The 5800MINI is somewhat slimmer and more discreet than the 5816OD. The 5800MINI is white, while the 5816OD is black in color. Finally, the 5800MINI features LED lights that indicate certain conditions of the sensor.
