How Do I Add a Siren to the IQ Panel 2 Using the Hardwire 16 and 16-S?
The Qolsys IQ Panel 2 has a switched output for controlling an external siren. The Hardwire 16 and 16-S have a 12 Volt DC power output that can be used to power an external siren. Together, they can provide 12 VDC at up to 300 mA of current upon any audible alarm which occurs on the panel.
The Qolsys IQ Panel 2 has an open collector output, which automatically activates upon any alarm on the panel. When activated, it provides a short to ground. It has a contact rating of 12VDC at up to 300 mA maximum.
The Hardwire 16 and Hardwire 16-S both feature a 12VDC output, which can provide up to 500 mA of current. This can be used to power a siren. When the panel and the Hardwire 16 or 16-S are combined, they provide a switched, 12VDC output that can handle up to 300 mA of current throughput. When wired as shown below, no additional programming is required. This configuration will support low current sirens, such as the Wave2PD or the Wave2EX. If a high current sounder is required, we recommend using a different configuration.
Use the following diagram and the steps below to add a siren to the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 using the Hardwire 16 or Hardwire 16-S:
1. Power the equipment. Power the Hardwire 16 or Hardwire 16-S and the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 according to their respective installation manuals.
2. Choose a siren. Select a hardwired siren for the application. Multiple sirens can be used if desired. Make sure the total of all sirens you plan to connect to this output does not exceed 300 mA of current at 12-Volts DC.
3. Make wiring connections. Connect the siren's positive (+) terminal to the Hardwire 16/16-S AUX OUT, as shown in the diagram above. Connect the siren's negative (-) terminal to the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 EXT SIREN terminal. Connect the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 GND terminal to the Hardwire 16/16-S GND OUT.
When an audible alarm occurs, the floating negative at EXT SIREN will switch to ground. This will complete the siren circuit and providing power to the sounders. This output will follow the panel's sounder, with no additional programming required.
