How Do I Add a Z-Wave Device to a 2GIG Edge?
You can add a Z-Wace device to a 2GIG Edge by first clearing the device from the network, then putting the Edge into its Z-Wave pairing mode, and then activating the inclusion function on the Z-Wave device. For Z-Wave Plus devices using S2 Security, you may be asked to provide a DSK Code.
The 2GIG Edge is a fully functional automation controller with an integrated Z-Wave Plus V2 Card. This version of Z-Wave Plus is also referred to as the 700-Series. In addition to supporting virtually all Z-Wave Plus devices, the Edge is also backward compatible with most classic Z-Wave devices. You can control paired Z-Wave devices locally at the panel, as well as remotely from Alarm.com if the system is set up with a monitoring plan that includes automation. Paired Z-Wave devices can also be included with smart scenes for automatic operation based on a schedule and/or with predetermined events on the security system.
Please note that while the 2GIG Edge technically supports the maximum number of Z-Wave devices that can be paired with a Z-Wave controller, which is 232 Z-Wave devices, Alarm.com has a lower Z-Wave device limit of 122 Z-Wave devices. For more information on Alarm.com Z-Wave device limits, please refer to this FAQ.
Complete the following steps to add a Z-Wave device to a 2GIG Edge:
1. Enter Remove Device Mode. Depending on the device, you should first clear the device from the Z-Wave network. This can be done even if the device in question is not actively paired with this Z-Wave controller. Even if you have a brand-new Z-Wave device, it may still have residual network data left over from factory testing. That is why it is always a good idea to clear a Z-Wave device from the network first, before then attempting to pair it. Some Z-Wave devices are smarter than others, and those devices may be able to indicate through LEDs or other means whether they need to be cleared before pairing.
Start from the main screen of the 2GIG Edge. Click the settings icon (the gear) in the bottom-right. Enter the Installer Code for the system (default 1561). Choose Smart Home Settings on the right-hand side. Then choose the option for Remove Device. Then press the red Remove Device button in the center of the screen towards the bottom. The Edge will begin listening for a device to clear from the network.
2. Clear the device. Activate the exclusion function on the Z-Wave device to clear it from the network. The device should be powered on and nearby the panel when doing this. Many Z-Wave devices have a button that is used for including and excluding. Other Z-Wave devices may follow a different process, such as requiring you to input a specific code or another command. Refer to the manual for the Z-Wave device for more information on including and excluding. The Edge Panel should display a message stating that a Z-Wave device was removed. Press the blue Done button on the right-hand side. Then press the green Done button towards the lower-right corner of the screen.
3. Pair the Z-Wave device. After pressing the return arrow, you should be back in the Smart Home Settings Menu. Choose the option for Add Device. Then click the green Add Device button. The 2GIG Edge will begin listening for a device to pair. Activate the inclusion function on the Z-Wave device. This may be the same command that you used to clear the device from the network. Again, the device may have a button for this task, or you may need to input some other command to do this. When in doubt, refer to the manual for the Z-Wave device. The 2GIG Edge should receive the signal from the Z-Wave device and pair it with the network. If the device in question is a Z-Wave Plus device with S2 Security, then you may be asked to enter the first five (5) digits of the device's DSK Code. This code can usually be found on a sticker on the device itself or on its product packaging. If you are asked for the code, find it in one of the aforementioned locations, enter it, then press the blue Done button at the bottom right. After doing this, or if no DSK Code was needed, you should reach a screen stating that a Z-Wave device has been added. Press the blue Done button on the right-hand side to continue. Then press the green Done button near the bottom-right corner of the screen to go back to the Smart Home Settings Menu.
4. Return home. You can press the small icon of the house in the lower-right corner to return to the home screen.
