What is a 3GL?

A 3GL is a discontinued AT&T 3G cellular communicator that is compatible with the Honeywell L5200, L5210 and L7000 Alarm Panels. The module was once called the "4GL", but Honeywell changed the name, since it led customers to believe that it was a 4G communicator, when really it was only 3G.

The Honeywell 3GL has since been replaced by the Honeywell LTE-L57A and the Honeywell LTE-L57V Cellular Communicators. These two communicators both operate on newer, faster and more reliable LTE cellular networks. The difference between the two is that the LTE-L57A connects with the AT&T LTE Network, while the LTE-L57V connects with the Verizon LTE Network. End users should choose whichever cellular service works better in their area. Both of these LTE networks provide better communication and service when compared with a 3G network. The LTE-L57A and the LTE-L57V will work with the L5200, L5210 and L7000 Systems.

However, the system must be running a minimum firmware version to support an LTE communicator. Firmware Revision 9.00.201 or higher is required to support a Honeywell LTE-L57V. A LYNX Touch System that is already connected with a 3GL or a GSMVLP5-4G Communicator will continue to work as long as those cellular networks are kept in service. However, these communicators can no longer be activated for monitoring service, as the networks are going to be shut down in the coming years. More information can be found here.

Beyond cellular monitoring, there are still IP communication options for LYNX Touch Systems. This can be accomplished by adding either an L5100-WIFI Card or an ILP5 Hardwired Ethernet Module. Just remember that IP communication is not as reliable as a cellular connection. But it is still a viable option if the user has reliable internet service that they can count on. Another option is to upgrade to a new alarm system that will support cellular communication. Many users find that upgrading to the Honeywell Lyric Controller from a LYNX Touch System is an easy option.
