What Is the 5800MINI's Range?
The 5800MINI's range is 200 nominal feet. This means that the sensor can communicate successfully with the panel from up to 200 feet away when used in an open air setting. Trying to use the sensor from outside this range or introducing obstacles or interference can prevent communication.
The Honeywell 5800MINI is a wireless door and window contact that operates using a sensor and a magnet. The sensor is installed on the door or window frame and magnet is installed on the door or window itself. When the door or window is opened, the magnet will separate from the sensor. This will release a metal reed switch inside the 5800MINI.
The 5800MINI will then send out a 345 MHz wireless signal to the panel to let it know that the door or window has been opened. The 5800MINI can be used with nearly any system with a wireless receiver that accepts the 345 MHz frequency. This includes most Honeywell Systems and most 2GIG Systems. If you want to use the 5800MINI with a non-345 MHz wireless receiver, you will need a compatible wireless translator like the Resolution Products RE524X.
When using the 5800MINI, a user can expect a 200 foot range in an open air environment. For best results, the sensor should have a direct signal path to the panel. If there are many walls and large metal objects in the way, then the wireless range can be disrupted. Users should also be aware that installing the 5800MINI on a metal door or structure can significantly reduce signal range. Keep this in mind if you have metal doors or windows.
If you find that your 5800MINI is having trouble communicating with the panel, then you might want to add a compatible wireless repeater. A wireless repeater will take the 345 MHz signal sent out from the 5800MINI and send it out a second time. This way, the wireless signal range will be effectively doubled, and the sensor will have an easier time communicating with the panel.
Keep in mind though that wireless signals can only be repeated once, and you cannot use multiple repeaters with the same wireless sensor. If you try to add a second repeater to have the signal repeated a third time, then it will not work. A good wireless repeater to use for this purpose is the Honeywell 5800RP. This device was designed specifically for Honeywell 5800 Series Devices like the 5800MINI.
