Description

The Honeywell MPS95WG is a recessed door or window contact with wire leads. The MPS95WG is also known as a stubby contact because the contact is only .85” long and .375” in diameter. With these dimensions, the MPS95WG is one of the smallest recessed contacts available from Honeywell. You can order the recessed contact in your choice of brown or white. The white version of the MPS95WG has a part number of MPS95WWG and the brown version has a part number of MPS95BWG.

Many people prefer recessed contacts to surface mount contacts because they are less noticeable. Recessed contacts are meant to be installed into the door or window you are trying to protect. Therefore, you cannot see a recessed contact when the door or window is closed. Even when the door or window is open, you can only see a small circle along the edge of the door or window where the contact is recessed into the wood. The aesthetics of the MPS95WG make it an appealing choice for homes. However, keep in mind that recessed contacts are more labor intensive than surface mount contacts. While surface mount contacts can be installed as easily as peeling off the paper from the double sided tape and affixing the contact to the door or window, recessed contacts require you to drill a hole into your door or window and into the frame. If you are not comfortable with the installation requirements of a recessed contact, you should look at the many different surface mount door and window contacts that Honeywell offers instead.

Unlike other recessed door and window contacts, the MPS95WG has a raw magnet that is not encased in plastic. The magnet is 1.18” long and has a diameter of .25”. You must install the magnet directly opposite the recessed contact. You should install the magnet into the actual door or window and you should install the MPS95WG contact into the door or window frame. There are 12” wire leads coming out of the backside of the MPS95WG recessed contact. To connect the contact to your wired alarm control panel, you simply splice your (2) conductor zone wiring to the wire leads. As the MPS95WG is a Form A, SPST, normally closed device, you must use a normally closed zone configuration when programming your alarm control panel. The internal reed switch has a contact rating of 300mA at 30VDC. When the door or window is closed, the magnet is energizing the contact and the zone is normal. If your security system is armed, and the door or window is opened, the magnet separates from the reed switch and an alarm is triggered. The Honeywell MPS95WG has a magnet spacing gap of 1.25” so make sure that when your door or window is closed, the magnet is not further than 1.25” from the contact.

Great Recessed Door/Window Sensor
Submitted on 10/19/2020 Alarm Grid

The Honeywell MPS95WG is a recessed door and window contact that has wire leads instead of screw terminals. The sensor is virtually unnoticeable once installed, and it measures just 0.85" long and 0.375" in diameter. It comes bundled with a metal magnet that is not encased or coated in plastic. For normal operation, the sensor should be installed in the stationary door or window frame, and the magnet should be installed in the moving portion of the door or window. While the Honeywell MPS95WG still works pretty well as a door and window sensor, it has been discontinued, and you are unlikely to find a new model. There is also the consideration that the sensor must be installed and requires drilling holes. But we like the Honeywell MPS95WG enough that we can still give it a 5-Star rating.

There are many positive aspects for the Honeywell MPS95WG. Some users prefer leads instead of terminals, so this is a good option for installers who want that option. The sensor is recessed, and it cannot be seen on the outside of a door or window. That's a major benefit for users who are going for an aesthetically pleasing installation. The sensor has a really nice build quality, and its compact size minimizes the sizes of the holes that must be drilled.

The downsides of the Honeywell MPS95WG do not affect its score. The sensor is discontinued, so you probably won't find it new. A used model should still work fine though. Needing to drill holes is somewhat of an inconvenience, and many users go with surface-mount sensors for that reason. And since this is a wired sensor, you must run a wire from the panel to the sensor. But these downsides are minor, and we can still give the Honeywell MPS95WG a perfect 5-Star score.

Good: Wire Leads, Not Visible from Outside, Good Build Quality, Compact Size

Bad: Discontinued, Must Drill Holes, Requires Running Wires

Bottom Line: 5 Stars
