Leviton 47617-REB

The Leviton 47617-REB is a recessed box designed to terminate line and/or low voltage wall plates. For new construction, there are side slotted holes where you can screw the box to the side of a stud. For retrofits, you can simply outline the box using the install guide and cut the sheetrock to fit the recessed unit. There are 3 single gang cut outs where you can install an old-work electrical junction box and/or low voltage rings. Traditionally, this box is designed for flatscreen television installs but they can be very useful for hiding your alarm system's AC power transformer.

Always remember to kill the circuit breaker and verify power is off with a AC power sensing device after. Then you can use a stud finder to mark the studs in relation to the existing AC receptacle you plan on pulling your 110VAC from. Using a sheetrock saw and level, cut your hole at 8 inches wide and 7.2 inches high. Once your box is cut into the sheetrock, you can use the large opening to snake an 18 to 22AWG 2-conductor cable (i.e. 18/2) from your proposed alarm control panel location. Shooting the snake from the smaller hole at the panel location will be easier. Then, you can run your high voltage AC (Romex). Ideally you should cut this box into the same wall cavity bay as the existing receptacle. Then you do not have to traverse a stud to bring your Romex extension to the recessed box.

After you install the receptacle, you can connect your low voltage cable to the transformer that came the alarm panel. Then plug it into the outlet located in recessed box. If you really want to get fancy you can purchase the Leviton 47617-HPC plastic cover to completely hide everything that is going on in the box. This a great solution not only for aesthetics but for added visual protection to the source of power for your alarm panel.

Please note: Old-work AC box and plastic cover not included. You can purchase the box from your local hardware store along with the Romex and low voltage wiring. We prefer stranded 2-conductor, 18AWG.
