The Magnasphere MR-MSS10CTB is a MSS-10CT-B 3/8" (10mm) Recessed Door & Window Contact. What sets this contact apart is its construction. Instead of using a reed switch, which can be vulnerable to damage or tampering, Magnasphere contacts use a patented alternative method for detecting when a door or window is opened.
Most security contacts used to protect openings such as doors and windows are made using a technology known as the reed switch. A reed switch consists of two (2) thin (reed-like) pieces of metal that overlap in the middle enclosed in a very small, sealed glass tube. When the two pieces of metal are touching, the contact is closed, and when they aren't, the contact is open. A magnet causes the Reed switch to either open or close, depending on the configuration of the sensor. Generally, the magnet is placed in the moving portion of the door or window, and the sensor is placed in the frame. When the door or window is closed, the magnet is close to the reed switch, and it is also closed. When opened, the magnet is pulled away, and the reed switch also opens.
Reed switches can be vulnerable to a few different issues. In theory, placing any magnet near a reed switch-style contact could fool the sensor into remaining closed, even when the door or window is opened. Another vulnerability is breakage. The glass tube that houses the Reed switch can be broken. Finally, if too much voltage or current is passed through the Reed switch, it can fuse closed, so that regardless of the placement of the magnet, the door or window would always appear to the alarm system to be closed.
The Magnasphere switch uses a magnet ball inside the contact, rather than a reed switch. The magnet ball operates in conjunction with its magnet in a defined activation zone, so only a magnet that is correctly oriented can restore the contact to its normal state. This prevents defeat using a secondary magnet. The magnet ball is much more resistant to contact welding than a reed switch, and since there is no glass inside the MR-MSS10CTB it is, for all practical purposes, unbreakable.
