The garage is one of the most vulnerable locations inside a house. Everyday, criminals take advantage of open garage doors to enter homes and steal property. If you inadvertently leave your garage door open, you are practically asking home intruders to rob you blind. A great way to prevent this from happening is with a garage door sensor. These devices are used to let you know when the garage door has been opened. They can also let you know if you forgot to close the garage door in the first place. This can potentially prevent a serious break-in from occurring.

Garage door sensors are particularly useful when paired with an interactive security service, such as Total Connect or Alarm.com. These services will allow you to check the current status of your garage door sensor using an web browser or the service’s official mobile app. This can be a great way to make sure that you closed your garage door after you left your home. Many customers also use garage door sensors with Z-Wave garage door controllers so that they are able to open and close their garage door from virtually anywhere.

Wireless garage door sensors typically exist in one of two forms. These two forms are tilt sensors and door contacts. Tilt sensors respond to the sensor’s change in orientation when the garage door is opened or closed. When the garage door is opened, the sensor will shift from a vertical position to a horizontal position. This will cause the sensor to activate, and a signal will be sent to the security panel to let it know about the opened garage door. If the user receives text and email alerts, a message will be sent to them through those methods as well.

A garage door contact functions largely in the same manner as any other door and window contact. These devices consist of a sensor and a magnet. The sensor is typically placed on the frame of the garage door. The magnet is placed on the garage door itself, within an inch or two of the sensor. When the garage door is opened, the magnet will separate from the sensor. This will cause the sensor’s internal reed switch to activate. When this happens, the sensor will send a message to the security system to let it know about the opened garage door.

A great thing about wireless garage door sensors is that they eliminate the need for running any wires. The same cannot be said for hardwired garage door sensors, which can require wires to be run a considerable distance. This makes wireless garage door sensors very easy for end users to install on their own. However, you will need to make sure that the sensor is within the signal range of the security panel. If necessary, a wireless repeater can be added in order to extend this signal range. You must also make sure that the signal frequency used by the wireless sensor is compatible with your security system.
