Do I Have a PROWLTOUCHWM or a PROWLTOUCHWA wall mount?
To determine which unit you have, check the mounting screws and the provided power adapter. The PROWLTOUCHWA is a one-piece unit that requires three installation screws and is powered by a 9 VDC adapter. The older PROWLTOUCHWM is mounted using only two screws and offers a 5 VDC power adapter.
The PROWLTOUCHWM also comes in two separate pieces, a mounting bracket that is attached to the wall with two screws, and a charging cradle that attaches to the mounting bracket. Either wall mount kit can be used with the First Alert VISTAHTCHWLC, Honeywell Home PROWLTOUCH, and the Resideo PROWLTOUCHC. But knowing whether you have a PROWLTOUCHWA or a PROWLTOUCHWM is important because if you attempt to use the 9 VDC transformer meant for a PROWLTOUCHWA with an older PROWLTOUCHWM you can damage not only the wall mount, but also the touchscreen keypad it's being used with.
Internally, the circuitry for the PROWLTOUCHWA wall mount has been modified to support the higher voltage, ensuring the keypad still receives the required 5 VDC through a step-down process. The PROWLTOUCHWM does not include this step-down circuitry. That's why using the 9 VDC adapter with the PROWLTOUCHWM is not supported. The 9 VDC power adapter allows for greater installation flexibility by enabling longer power wiring runs to the touchscreen keypad.

Resideo manufactured a small number of PROWLTOUCHWM units with the upgraded circuitry, before determining that a further product upgrade and name change was in order. However, as we have no way to visually determine if a product marked PROWLTOUCHWM is compatible with the 9 VDC power supply, we are recommending that only the one-piece PROWLTOUCHWA be used with this power adapter.
We recently had a scenario where a customer was sent a newer 9 VDC power supply, with a two-piece PROWLTOUCHWM wall mount unit. Fortunately, the customer noticed that the model number on the box the adapter came in was different from the model number ordered, and checked with our technical support team prior to powering the unit up.
The new PROWLTOUCHWA offers a more stable and integrated solution compared to the original PROWLTOUCHWM. The PROWLTOUCHWA combines the mounting bracket and charging cradle into a single, sturdy piece. The PROWLTOUCHWM, on the other hand, used a separate mounting bracket secured with only two screws, followed by the attachment of the keypad charging cradle. This two-part system often resulted in unwanted keypad movement during operation.
In the image below, the front of the PROWLTOUCHWM charging cradle is shown with the back of the separate wall mounting bracket. You can see the holes for only two screws:
In this image, you can see the back of the PROWLTOUCHWM charging cradle. The wires for power connect to the two screw terminals. The charging cradle slides down over top of the three notches shown on the front of the wall mounting bracket:
Below is an image of the 5 VDC power adapter for the PROWLTOUCHWM:
Below you can see what comes in the box for the PROWLTOUCHWA. Included is the charging cradle/mount, which is now one piece. You can see the screw terminals used to connect the power wiring. Also included is the 9 VDC power adapter, mounting hardware, installation instructions, and a template with handy markings for screw placement and a wiring access cutout if you plan to fish the power wire behind the wall:
In the below image you can see the front of the PROWLTOUCHWA charging cradle. The white area you see inside the top screw hole is a removable plug. Push it forward from the back, through the screw hole. After you tighten down the top screw, push the plug back into the hole to hide the screw.
In this image, you can see the 9 VDC power adapter that comes with the PROWLTOUCHWA. This adapter should only be used with the one-piece PROWLTOUCHWA and never with the two-piece PROWLTOUCHWM. Use of the 9 VDC adapter with the PROWLTOUCHWM may damage the charging cradle as well as the touchscreen keypad:
