Is SmartThings Compatible with Z-Wave?
Yes, SmartThings is compatible with Z-Wave. A SmartThings hub has the ability to serve as a Z-Wave Controller for supporting Z-Wave smart home devices. A user can then control their Z-Wave devices and any programmed smart scenes through the SmartThings App on their iOS or Android device.
Samsung SmartThings will also support voice commands when paired with a smart assistant, such as Google Home, Amazon Alexa or Apple HomeKit. A user will typically want to have their SmartThings hub serve as the primary controller for their Z-Wave devices because of the great features that a SmartThings hub offers. An example of such a feature is the ability to create advanced "if-then" conditions when creating rules.
A user of Samsung SmartThings may want to set up their alarm system to serve as a secondary Z-Wave controller. This way, they can control their Z-Wave devices from both their panel and using the SmartThings App. A user can also create rules and scenes that allow Z-Wave devices to respond with actions involving the security system. This could include things like arming or disarming the system or activating a security sensor. A great panel to do this with is the Honeywell Lyric Controller.
A great aspect of the Honeywell Lyric Controller is that it can access the Total Connect 2.0 service. Total Connect will support automation control with the Lyric System, even if the panel is set up as a secondary Z-Wave controller. A user can then access Total Connect at any time in order to control their Z-Wave devices remotely. Both the Lyric Controller and the SmartThings will be able to recognize any Z-Wave operation that occurs through either controller. But please note that when using the Lyric Controller as a secondary Z-Wave controller, a user may lose the ability to operate Z-Wave locks using programmed system codes.
