What Are The Correct Power Supplies for Both Versions of the IQ Remote?

The correct power supplies for both versions of the IQ Remote are a 7VDC transformer for new models, and a 5.5VDC transformer for older models. The newer IQ Remote Models feature the same connection port as the IQ Panel 2 Plus System. The older IQ Remotes have a smaller connection port.

The Qolsys IQ Remote is a touchscreen keypad for the the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 and IQ Panel 2 Plus Systems. The IQ Remote connects with these systems through a local WIFI network. The keypad uses a plug-in transformer as its primary source of power. The type of transformer that comes included with the keypad depends upon the version. There are actually three (3) versions of the IQ Remote. Each version of the IQ Remote includes a different transformer.

The two (2) older versions of the IQ Remote actually use a very similar transformer. The are identified by the SKUs QW9102-840 and QW9103-840. The easiest way to identify one of the older style of IQ Remotes is that the camera on the front will be off to the right at the top. The new style IQ Remotes (seen in the picture above) will have the camera in the center at the top.

The oldest model of the IQ Remote is the QW9102-840. This version came with a 5VDC transformer. The connector cable was fixed to the plug-in transformer, and it could not be removed. The cable ended with a very small barrel connector that was designed exclusively to fit an older style IQ Remote Keypad. If you need to replace this transformer and cable, look for the generic model number ANU-050200A. These can be found online.

The IQ Remote was then slightly upgraded to the QW9103-840 model. This version came with a 5.5VDC transformer with screw terminals for the cable. The screw terminals allow the transformer to be replaced if needed. But the connection port for the QW9103-840 IQ Remote is still the same small barrel port that the QW9102-840 IQ Remote uses.

Really, you should be able to use either style transformer with both the QW9102-840 and the QW9103-840. The power requirements for these two keypads are the same. If you have a detachable cable available that will fit with the old-style IQ Remote, you should go with the 5.5VDC transformer with screw terminals. Having a removable cable is always preferable for this type of equipment.

This 5.5VDC transformer used with these keypads is actually also the original transformer for the IQ Panel 2 System. It is called the Qolsys QR0029-840, and it can be purchased from the Alarm Grid website. However, the IQ Remote cable with the small barrel connector is not included with this transformer. You may have trouble finding this cable by itself. In that case, your best bet may be to just get an ANU-050200A transformer. The ANU-050200A transformer has a fixed cable with an end that can connect with either the QW9102-840 or the QW9103-840.

The newest IQ Remote model as of October 2019 is the QW9104-840. This version can be easily identified by having the camera in the center at the top of the keypad. The barrel connector port for the QW9104-840 was changed so that it matched the larger barrel connector port of the IQ Panel 2 Plus System. This means that you can use the same connector cable with the QW9104-840 IQ Remote as you would for an IQ Panel 2 Plus System.

And to make things even easier, the QW9104-840 uses a transformer that is also compatible with the IQ Panel 2. This is the 7VDC Qolsys QR0051-840. And it comes with the cable that is needed to power the QW9104-840 IQ Remote. So if you ever need to get a new power cable and transformer for a QW9104-840 IQ Remote, just buy the 7VDC QR0051-840.

Now, it must be mentioned that until recently the IQ Panel 2 System did not come with the 7VDC Qolsys QR0051-840. Instead, it came with a different 5.5VDC transformer called the Qolsys QR0029-840. The 5.5VDC QR0029-840 will work with any IQ Panel 2 System, but the 7VDC QR0029-840 is preferred, since it supports longer wire runs.

For a QW9104-840 IQ Remote, the recommended transformer is always the 7VDC Qolsys QR0051-840. If you try to use a 5.5VDC Qolsys QR0029-840 with the QW9104-840 IQ Remote, then it will not damage the keypad in any way. However, you may find that it does not provide sufficient power for normal operation.

The table below outlines all three (3) styles of IQ Remote Keypads and the best transformer to use:
