What is the Qolsys Hardwire-16?
The Qolsys Hardwire-16 is a wired to wireless converter module that is designed for use with wireless alarm systems that operate at 319.5 MHz. Hardwired sensors connect directly with the Hardwire-16 module. The device then sends a 319.5 MHz signal to the panel on the behalf of the sensors.
Many users who upgrade from an older wired alarm system want some way of bringing their old sensors over to their new system without having to replace them. The benefit to doing this is that they will not have to go out and spend a large amount of money on brand-new sensors. If the old sensors work just fine, why replace them? That is where a wired to wireless converter comes into play. The user will typically mount the converter in the previous location of the old wired control panel. That way, they can conveniently connect all of their old hardwired sensors with the module. The converter will then send a wireless signal to the panel. By doing this, the system will recognize the wired sensors as wireless ones. Meanwhile, the user will get to enjoy the benefits and convenience of having a brand-new wireless security system.
In the case of the Qolsys Hardwire-16, the converter operates at a frequency of 319.5 MHz. It is an unencrypted, unidirectional device that will work with virtually any alarm system that accepts the 319.5 MHz signal. This includes wireless Interlogix Systems and the Qolsys IQ Panel 2. The module has enough available terminals to support up to 16 wireless system zones. If a user wants to bring over additional hardwired sensors, they will need an additional converter. Please note that hardwired life-safety sensors cannot be used with the Qolsys Hardwire-16. This includes any smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. The Qolsys Hardwire-16 is for security zones only.
Alarm Grid also offers other wired to wireless converters that are similar to the Hardwire-16. The Hardwire-8 offers 8 terminals instead of 16. The Hardwire-16S uses rolling code encryption for added security. There's also the Hardwire-8S also uses rolling code encryption, but it only includes 8 terminals.
