Are There Security Systems Better Than a Honeywell L5000 Alarm System?
Yes, there are security systems better than a Honeywell L5000 Alarm System. The L5000 is an extremely outdated alarm control panel. With the right support, it can still provide monitoring services. However, the features that the L5000 System can offer are very limited by today's standards.
Most of the limitations for the L5000 System come with the fact that it does not receive support from many communicators. In fact, cellular monitoring is no longer possible for the L5000. Its only compatible cellular communicator, the Honeywell GSMVLP5, will no longer work. This is because the network it connected with, the AT&T 2G Cellular Network, has since been discontinued. The panel is also incompatible with the L5100-WIFI module for WIFI connectivity. However, the system can still utilize a hardwired ethernet connection with a Honeywell ILP5. As a result, an user can still receive IP alarm monitoring with an L5000.
But beyond that, the L5000 is incredibly limited in what it can do. It could almost be considered archaic. The system will not support the L5100-ZWAVE module, so smart home automation is out of the question. Even though the system can connect with the Honeywell AlarmNet servers, it cannot be used with Total Connect 2.0. The Total Connect 1.0 service will work with the L5000, but this is not recommended. The Total Connect 1.0 platform offers limited functionality, and it is set to be shut down by 2020. If you want to use interactive services with an alarm system, we strongly encourage you to upgrade from an L5000 Panel.
Fortunately, there are many options for upgrading an L5000. They newest Honeywell System, the Honeywell Lyric Controller makes for a great replacement. If a user doesn't need all of the features of the Lyric, the Honeywell L5210 and Honeywell L7000 Systems are suitable as well. The only reason to not upgrade from an L5000 is if you are content with basic IP monitoring through a hardwired connection, and you have no desire to take advantage of the convenience offered from interactive services. Remember though that Alarm Grid recommends the use of cellular monitoring for better reliability and consistency.
