How Do I Program a Resideo 5800CMBOV Properly?

To program the Resideo 5800CMBOV you must first decide which features you plan to use. The device can detect smoke, heat, carbon monoxide, low temperature, and can supervise for maintenance. Once you decide which features you will use, program a zone for each feature as described below.

The Resideo 5800CMBOV provides protection for nearly every life-safety concern. It monitors for the presence of both smoke and fixed-temperature high heat (135°F, 57.2°C) conditions. It also supports the detection of dangerous levels of carbon monoxide (CO) gas. The CO detector has a ten (10) year life expectancy from the date of manufacture. It can also alert the panel when it reaches its end-of-life. When that happens, the detector should be replaced. The VISTA-15P, VISTA-20P, and VISTA-21iP panels automatically monitor the detector for end-of-life. While other panels, such as the VISTA-128BPT and VISTA-250BPT will need to have a separate zone programmed.

In addition to the various alarm conditions, the detector can also monitor itself to determine if maintenance is needed. This is usually caused by dirt, dust, or other contaminants entering the smoke sensing chamber. This can potentially cause the smoke detector to indicate a false alarm, or worse, not activate in the event of an actual fire. When a maintenance condition is reported, the detector should be taken down and cleaned. This can be done using a clean, soft cloth and canned air. Refer to the 5800CMBOV installation guide for full information.

The installation guide mentions programming for different services. This language, specifically the mention of services, is usually associated with the newer PROSIX wireless sensors. For this reason, some users who are accustomed to programming 5800 series wireless sensors may find the terminology confusing. Below, we'll map out each available programmable feature, and what serial number and loop number each one uses.

Speaking of serial numbers, the Resideo 5800CMBOV has a serial number sticker located on the device. If you choose to learn the device into the panel, then the sticker will be used mainly to verify that the correct information is learned by the panel during programming. However, if you plan to manually type in the serial number then you'll need to understand the sticker.

The sticker shown on the device is the serial number for the smoke/heat detector. It will be used when programming the system to monitor for smoke/heat, maintenance, and low temperature, if desired. The serial number for carbon monoxide monitoring is one (1) digit higher than the serial number for smoke/heat. For example, if the smoke/heat serial number printed on the sticker is 000-1234, then the serial number for carbon monoxide is 000-1235.

An exception to this rule occurs when the last digit of the serial number is nine (9). When that happens, then the CO serial number is one (1) digit higher than the last two (2) digits of the number printed on the sticker. For example, if the sticker shows 000-2349, then the CO serial number is 000-2350.

Programming the Resideo 5800CMBOV:

These steps assume that the 5800CMBOV base has been properly mounted but the sensor is not yet powered on.
  1. Power on and choose a language. At this point, the 5800CMBOV should not be mounted on the base. If it is, turn it counter-clockwise a quarter turn and pull it off the base. Pull the battery tabs to power on the 5800CMBOV. Make sure the four (4) CR123A batteries are properly seated within the battery compartment. They can sometimes be jarred loose during transport. If any of the batteries are not properly seated, you may get a low battery indication within the first fifteen seconds.
When initially powered up, the detector's status LED will blink green once. The process of powering up will take about 30-seconds while the CO detector gets settled. Once powered and stable, the status LED will blink green every two (2) seconds and the unit will verbally prompt you to choose a language. Within the first forty seconds, choose either English or Spanish.
    • English - Press and release the Smoke Test/Hush Button (●).
    • Spanish - Press and release the Carbon Monoxide Test/Hush Button (●●).
If you do nothing, after 40 seconds the 5800CMBOV will default to English. To change the selected language press and hold both the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Test/Hush buttons for five (5) seconds. The language choice announcement will sound and the status LED will flash green every two (2) seconds. Press and release the appropriate button (noted above) within 40 seconds to select the desired language.
  2. Program the sensor. This FAQ concentrates on the 5800CMBOV, so it does not go into detail on the panel side of programming. If you need assistance with zone programming on a 5800 series compatible Resideo or Honeywell Home panel, we'll link to some FAQs that deal with panel programming at the bottom of this page.
Enter panel programming and go to wireless zone programming. The 5800CMBOV must be off the base with the tamper faulted during serial number enrollment. If you choose to use all of the available features associated with the smoke detector serial number, it will require a total of three (3) zones on most residential panels.
When you want to learn serial number 1 into zone programming, press and release the Smoke Test/Hush Button (●) when prompted. Make sure the detector is off the base while learning in the serial number.
When you want to learn serial number 2 into zone programming, press and release the Carbon Monoxide Test/Hush Button (●●). Again, making sure the detector is not mounted to the base during enrollment.

  3. Programming Options for the Smoke/Heat Serial Number

Function Serial Number Used Loop Number Recommended Zone Type
    Smoke/Heat Serial Number 1
    (on sticker)
1 Fire Without Verification or Fire With Verification
Zone Type 09 or Zone Type 16 on residential VISTA panels
    Maintenance* Serial Number 1
    (on sticker)
    2 Day/Night, 24-Hour Monitor, 24-Hour Auxiliary
Zone Type 05, 12, or 08 on residential VISTA panels
    Low Temperature** Serial Number 1
    (on sticker)
    3 Day/Night, 24-Hour Monitor, 24-Hour Auxiliary
Zone Type 05, 12, or 08 on residential VISTA panels
*A separate zone to monitor the maintenance feature is only required on systems without the option for "Smart Contact" in zone programming. For those panels that support it, enabling "Smart Contact" in zone programming automatically enables the maintenance feature without using a separate zone. VISTA-128 and VISTA-250 panels support "Smart Contact" programming. All VISTA-15P, VISTA-20P, and VISTA-21iP panels require the programming of a separate zone in order to enable the maintenance feature.
**A low temperature alert is triggered when the ambient temperature at the sensor drops below 41°F (5°C). The signal for low temperature is piggy-backed on the next supervision check-in signal. A restore signal is sent when the ambient temperature rises above the threshold temperature plus 4°C. This buffer, known as hysteresis, prevents the sensor from going into and out of alert while the ambient temperature returns to normal. While in a low temperature condition, the status LED blinks red every eight (8) seconds.

Programming Options for the Carbon Monoxide Serial Number

Function Serial Number Used Loop Number Recommended Zone Type
    Carbon Monoxide Serial Number 2
(1 digit higher than the sticker)
    1 Carbon Monoxide
Zone Type 14 on residential VISTA panels
CO Sensor End-of-Life* Serial Number 2
(1 digit higher than the sticker)
    2 Day/Night, 24-Hour Monitor, 24-Hour Auxiliary
Zone Type 05, 12, or 08 on residential VISTA panels
*On VISTA-15P, VISTA-20P, and VISTA-21iP panels, CO sensor end-of-life is automatically monitored when the CO alarm zone is programmed. No separate zone is required. On commercial panels such as the VISTA-128 and VISTA-250, a separate zone is needed to monitor for the end-of-life report.
  4. Mount the detector. Once all programming is complete line the Resideo 5800CMBOV up with the base, press up or in, then turn it clockwise until fully seated on the base. It is recommended that you do this before you exit programming on the alarm panel. This will prevent a tamper trouble from being reported. Exit programming and wait about two (2) minutes to be sure you don't receive a trouble. If you do, the detector is likely not properly mounted to the base. Remove it from the base and then repeat the steps to mount it. Enter two (2) disarm sequences on the system or follow the instructions on the touchscreen panel to clear the trouble.
  5. Test all loops. The Transmitter ID Sniffer test, outlined in the steps below, is the best way to verify proper programming for wireless sensors. Access this test mode the same way on all VISTA panels. Other panels may or may not offer this test mode. Refer to the installation instructions for your specific panel as well as for the 5800CMBOV for steps to properly test this sensor.
You should also perform a functional test as outlined in the 5800CMBOV installation guide. For this, you may need canned smoke, canned CO gas, or both.
To test all programmed loops on a VISTA-15P, VISTA-20P, or VISTA-21iP:
    • Enter the Transmitter Sniffer test mode on your alarm panel by entering Installer Code (4112 by default) + [#] + [3] on an alpha keypad such as a 6160. The panel will build a list of all programmed wireless zones, including those for the 5800CMBOV. It will repeatedly scroll through this list. When a transmission is received, all zones associated with the serial number received are removed from the scrolling list.
    • To test the zones programmed for the smoke/heat serial number (potentially fire, maintenance, and low temp) press the Smoke Test/Hush Button (●) for one (1) to two (2) seconds. The detector will enter its own smoke test mode, it will announce the test, sound its siren, speak a message, and will transmit a signal to the panel.
    • When the panel receives the transmission it will sound one or more tones, and any zones associated with the serial number received will disappear from the scrolling list. Make sure all zones programmed with serial number 1 drop off the list.
    • Once the smoke serial number programming has been tested do the same for the carbon monoxide serial number. Press the Carbon Monoxide Test/Hush Button (●●) for one (1) to two (2) seconds. The detector will announce it is entering the test mode then it will sound its siren, speak a message, and will transmit with serial number two (2) to the alarm panel.
    • The panel will sound one or more tones when it receives the signal, and any zones programmed using serial number two (2) (potentially carbon monoxide and CO end-of-life) should disappear from the scrolling list. This verifies that the 5800CMBOV is transmitting successfully to the panel, and that the programming for the serial numbers and loop numbers for the detector are correct.
    • When all testing is complete, exit the test mode by entering the Installer Code + [1].
