What Happens to an Interlogix Simon XTi or XTi-5 When Internet Goes Down?
Nothing happens to an Interlogix Simon XTi or XTi-5 when the internet goes down. This is because these systems cannot use the internet. Instead, they use a traditional phone line or cellular connectivity to communicate their signals. A cellular module upgrade is needed to use cellular.
Interlogix does not produce any WIFI or IP cards for the Simon XTi and XTi-5 Systems. That gives these systems no way of connecting to the internet. Instead, the XTi and XTi-5 must rely on other ways for connecting to the network. But if the internet were to go down, it would not affect the system in any sort of way.
By default, these systems can only connect to a phone line for a traditional POTS (plain old telephone service) connection. Unfortunately, this is a relatively poor communication path for an alarm system. POTS communication is very slow, and the physical connection can be tampered with by an intruder. It also cannot be used with any type of interactive service platform. This makes POTS connectivity unsuitable for most modern alarm applications.
However, the Simon XTi and XTi-5 Systems can be upgraded to support a cellular connection. This is done by installing a cellular communicator with the system. The user will also need to obtain an alarm monitoring plan that includes cellular service. Cellular communication is the gold standard for alarm systems, because of its fast speeds and excellent reliability. This makes upgrading to cellular arguably the most important upgrade one can make for their Simon XTi or XTi-5 Alarm System. A cellular connection will also allow a Simon XTi or XTi-5 System to work with the Alarm.com Interactive Service. This service can be accessed from any web browser or through the Alarm.com Mobile App. A user can access this service to arm and disarm their system, check the status of sensors and control Z-Wave devices. Overall, the Alarm.com service represents a great secondary access point for a Simon XTi or XTi-5 Security System.
