Nortek & 2GIG Continuing to Reap Rewards

Posted By

Nortek Control, the parent company of 2GIG, has received multiple honors from CE Pro and their Quest for Quality Awards. The company has already received awards for its new 2GIG Edge Security System, and that trend looks to be continuing. Congratulations are in order for Nortek and 2GIG!

The Quest for Quality Awards from CE Pro is in its 11th annual edition. The awards recognize services from companies, rather than specific products. Winners are determined from an open-ended survey, in which respondents vote for the companies they believe are most deserving. This year, a record-breaking number of more than 14,550 votes, covering 17 different manufacturer categories and eight (8) different distributor categories, were received by CE Pro. And needless to say, 2GIG was a very big winner.

In total, Nortek Control and 2GIG received five (5) Quest for Quality Awards from CE Pro. The awards were as follows:

 • Platinum Award for Best Sales & Marketing Assistance
 • Platinum Award for Best Dealer & Program Incentives
 • Gold Award for Best COVID-19 Response
 • Gold Award for Best Dealer Protection Policies
 • Silver Award for Best Technical Support

Earlier this week, Melrose said in their interim financial report that they were under contract to sell Nortek Control. They did not indicate who the buyer was, so we will have to wait and see before guessing how much the new owners will want to support existing 2GIG products.
I have serious doubts about Nortek's ability to support 2GIG products. Nortek is owned by Melrose PLC, which is an investment company that typically owns a company for a few years before selling it. Typically these sort of investment owners sacrifice whatever they can to make the sort-term finances look really good to increase the sale price. I think that is what Nortek is doing here. I think Nortek did a rush job to get the EDGE panel out to increase sales, and are now shrinking the 2GIG staff to reduce expenses. All this so Melrose can sell Nortek probably later this year. I've heard from some sources that Nortek closed the main 2GIG office in Utah about a month ago, and let go of a number of 2GIG employees when they did that. All that being said, I think the Edge panel is a remarkable product and the 2GIG team that put it together should be proud. I'm sure Nortek wants to say "2GIG is back" but it is really hard to believe that when they are closing 2GIG offices and laying off people. Who knows who might buy Nortek and what their commitment to the 2GIG brand will be.
Compared to the GC3, it looks like some of the local "Rooms" and "Scenes" controls have gone away and the only way to do stuff like that is through the alarm.com app.
I would be really interested in seeing how the EDGE compares in terms of sensor signal reception range and reliability. When you pack a whole bunch of electronics and radios (cell, z-wave, bluetooth, wifi, 345) into a smaller device, you increase the likelihood that the electronics and radios interfere with each other.
The onboard siren is disappointingly quiet compared to the GC3. So you either need to include the cost of an external siren when considering the cost of an EDGE, or you need to be ok with a wimpy siren.
Firmware should be upgradable similar to how it was done with the GC3. However, since the panel was just released, it may be a while before Nortek releases upgraded firmware. Personally, I would wait until until after the first firmware update before buying an EDGE. First releases always have loads of bugs and I would want to see Nortek prove that they can in fact fix bugs through a working firmware upgrade.
That’s a very nice looking panel and I think all honeywell legacy sensors (5800s and keyfobs will work with 2GIG Edge panel. Is it firmware upgradable? If so how do you update the firmware? The bad news is your LTE radio transmitter is not replaceable, however, we don’t have to worry about it because LTE network is not going anywhere.
