Give Back/Get Back is a program sponsored by electric utility companies in the US. During the summer, when electricity usage is at its peak, these companies offer an incentive for customers with smart thermostats to allow the adjustment of their thermostats during peak usage, lowering demand.

Our first blog about Give Back/Get Back (Demand Response) was in May of 2020. Now, over twenty electric utility providers participate in the program, with thousands of customers taking advantage of these incentives.

Here's how the Give Back/Get Back program typically works: On extremely hot or cold days, when energy demand surges, your utility company partners with Alarm.com to make small, temporary temperature adjustments in participating homes. These adjustments, usually no more than four (4) degrees Fahrenheit, may last up to four (4) hours.

The adjustment lowers the demand on the power grid and also saves you money by causing your electric air conditioning or heating usage to be reduced. Those who heat their homes using gas, wood burning stoves, or other non-electric means can still participate if they cool their homes using electricity and have a qualified, internet-connected thermostat.

The two newest areas participating in Give Back/Get Back are PJM Utility and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). PJM Utility calls its program "Power Savers MidAtlantic" and the TVA calls its program "EnergyRight Smart Thermostat Rewards".

PJM Utility:

To participate under the PJM Utility program you must:

  • Be a resident of Ohio or Illinois and a customer of ComEd, Duke Energy Ohio, or AEP Ohio.
  • Have a qualifying, internet-connected smart thermostat.
  • Agree to allow the utility to adjust your thermostat setting during peak energy usage times.
  • Connect your utility account through the PJM Utility partners Voltus or Arcadia.

In exchange for their participation in the program, PJM Utility customers who sign up will receive an entry in a sweepstakes for $10,000. Each event that you participate in will give you another entry into the sweepstakes. You always have the option to choose not to participate in a temperature offset event in either program. Tennessee Valley Authority:

  • If you live in the seven-state Tennessee Valley region you can check whether your utility is participating here. If it is, enroll your qualifying thermostat here.
  • Have an internet-connected, qualifying smart thermostat.
  • If your primary heat source uses electricity and you have electric cooling, you're eligible for the year-round program.
  • If you use natural gas, wood-burning, or any other non-electric powered heat, and electricity for cooling you can still participate in the summer-only program.

In exchange for your participation, you will receive a $65 enrollment rebate for both the year-round and the summer-only program. Year-round participants will then receive a yearly $65 rebate as long as they continue to participate or until the program ends. Summer-only participants will receive a $20 rebate per participation year for the life of the program. You can read the full details of the TVA program here.

Alarm.com calls this Give Back/Get Back, but each utility company has their own program name. If you haven't seen us write about your utility provider, you can check to see if they participate in partnership with Alarm.com by going to thermostatrewards.com and looking for your electric utility's name. If it is listed, click the link and find out about your potential rewards for participation and what's required to sign up.

If you don't have a smart thermostat yet, your utility's program page likely lists compatible models, and often provides discounted purchase links. Once you install and connect your thermostat through Alarm.com, you can easily enroll in the program. Remember, incentives vary by utility, so review your company's specific program details. Investing in a smart thermostat is a wise choice, often paying for itself quickly through energy savings and program incentives.

The list of supported thermostats can vary by utility company, but in this case, both PJM and TVA support the same list of Alarm.com compatible thermostats.

Alarm Grid and Alarm.com customers in Ameren, IL can sign up for the Peak Time Savings Program. Once enrolled, you will receive a $50 e-gift card. For each subsequent year you remain enrolled, you will receive a $25 e-gift card. This is another way your smart thermostat can pay for itself.

We've written about the Give Back, Get Back program numerous times in the past. Many different utility companies offer a similar incentive program, and each company has its name for the program. Some offer rebates, others may offer bill credits. The incentive amounts also vary. The information included here is specific to the Ameren, IL program.

To qualify for this incentive, you just need the following:

  • Be a residential electric customer in Ameren, IL, with service in your name.
  • Use an internet-connected, qualifying smart thermostat.
  • Sign up for the program, which allows the Ameren, IL electric company to make small adjustments to your thermostat remotely, during peak usage times.
  • You must not already be participating in a demand response program.

The times when your thermostat is likely to be adjusted are during the hottest days of summer when power demands are at their greatest. This can cause strain on the electrical grid. By signing up for the Peak Time Savings Program, you agree that the electric company can make small adjustments of four (4) degrees or less during these times. These adjustments will last for no more than four (4) hours.

The most likely hours during which an adjustment may occur are between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. CT, but adjustments could occur anywhere from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. CT. You retain control of your thermostat and can opt out of an adjustment event at any time. In some cases, the thermostat may briefly be adjusted down (cooler) before being adjusted up (conservation) to maintain comfort during the adjustment period.

The thermostats that are compatible through Alarm.com are:

You can sign up for the program by going to this page, and then clicking the link "Enroll Your Smart Thermostat." Once you are accepted, you should receive an email within 60 days of being accepted. The $50 e-gift card will be delivered to your email, so be sure when you sign up, you enter the correct email information.

If you remain enrolled in the program, on the anniversary of your enrollment, you will receive a $25 e-gift card via email for your continued participation. This will occur each subsequent year you remain enrolled. Currently, there is no end date, so this incentive will continue until you are notified otherwise.

It's the middle of winter, but summer will be here before you know it. If you've been on the fence about purchasing a smart thermostat, this may be the perfect time to commit. Signing up for a program like this may seem like a small step, but as they say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step and every step brings you closer to your goal. In this case, the goal is energy conservation, and every little step helps.

Alarm.com announces the addition of Tuscon Electric Power, Modesto Irrigation District, and American Municipal Power (AMP) to the Give Back, Get Back Demand Conservation Program. Customers with a qualifying smart thermostat, like the Alarm.com T2000 Thermostat, can earn incentives for participating in the program.

In different areas, these incentive programs are called different things. Demand Conservation, Give Back, Get Back, and others. Basically, they all boil down to one thing. During peak usage times, usually, in the summer months, when demand is at its highest, you give the utility company permission to make minor adjustments to your temperature settings, which allows them to lessen the demand on the power grid during peak usage.

If you sign up for the program, you have the ability to opt out of a single event, and you can opt out of the program completely at any time. However, if you do opt out, you will give up any further incentives that may be available through the program.

Tuscon Electric Power customers can earn a $50 Mastercard e-gift card for each eligible thermostat (up to two (2) total) for enrolling in the Smart Rewards program and earn another $40 Mastercard e-gift card for each year of participation. That's $90 for one thermostat or $180 for two. Between these incentives and the savings provided by a smart thermostat, this is an upgrade that will pay for itself in no time!

Modesto Irrigation District customers will receive a $50 bill credit when they enroll in the MID Power Smart program. Then, receive a $20 bill credit for each year that you remain in the program. If you're adding a new Energy Star® smart thermostat to your home, you can also apply for up to a $50 rebate toward the purchase of the thermostat. The rebate is limited to two (2) qualifying thermostats per household. Visit their website for full details.

American Municipal Power (AMP) operates in several states, including Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana, Maryland, and Delaware. According to Alarm.com, customers receive $55 when enrolling in the program with AMP. However, according to the AMP website, participants who sign up will be entered into a drawing for a $250 gift card at the end of each peaking season. So, do your research if you are an AMP customer looking to sign up. You can check out the program at AMP here. When in doubt, give them a call and get the details.

Not a customer of one of the utility companies listed above? Never fear! There are many, many companies that have been participating in some variation of this program for years. Not an Alarm.com customer? That's ok too. Most utility companies have a list of smart thermostats that are compatible with their version of the demand conservation program. Find your utility company's site and search "smart thermostat." You'll likely come up with the information specific to your area. If not, give them a call. There's a reason these companies are willing to pay incentives for participation in this program. It's good for everyone involved.

As we've reported before, Alarm.com partners with electrical power providers all over the country in a demand response program called Give Back Get Back. In exchange for allowing your participating provider to adjust your thermostat slightly during peak demand hours, you receive a bonus.

According to Alarm.com, there are typically between six (6) and ten (10) peak events per summer season. Customers who opt into this program in their area will receive advance notice of any adjustment that is planned for their location. They have the ability to opt-out of a particular event, or the entire program, at any time. The most recent additions to the Give Back Get Back program are:

AEP PSO of Oklahoma

AEP PSO calls this program PSO's Power Hours program. In order to be eligible, you must be a PSO residential customer and the electric service must be in your name. You must have an eligible internet-connected smart thermostat controlling your central air conditioning. And you must agree to allow PSO to make brief, small adjustments to your thermostat during Peak Events on high demand days.

As an incentive, you will receive a $50 e-gift card per eligible device, once you have successfully enrolled that device into the program. This e-gift card will arrive within 60 days of your acceptance in the program. It will be sent to the email address used to register for the program so be sure you enter your email address correctly when signing up! At the end of the summer season, starting in 2022, you will receive a $25 e-gift card per participating thermostat. If you are enrolled in AEP PSO Oklahoma's Time-of-Day (TOD) rate option, you can also participate in the Power Hours Program.

By enrolling in ConEd's program in 2022, customers earn a chance to win a $5,000 prize. ConEd calls their program Power Savers. To be eligible to participate, you must be a resident of New York with an electric utility account, you must use your thermostat to control central air conditioning, and you must have installed an eligible thermostat. Note that the list of eligible thermostats is quite a bit smaller for ConEd.

With AEP ApCo, Appalachian Power Virginia, enrolled customers receive a $50 e-gift card upon enrollment and acceptance into the program. In addition, customers can earn up to $25 in e-gift cards at the end of the season ($5 for each summer month of participation from May - September).

To be eligible to enroll, you must be an Appalachian Power, VA residential electric customer, and the electrical service must be in your name. Once you install an eligible inter-connected smart thermostat for your central air conditioning system and sign up to allow Appalachian Power to make brief, small adjustments to your thermostat on days of high energy demand, you will receive your e-gift card. It should arrive within 60 days of being accepted into the program. The e-gift card will be sent to the email address used to register your thermostat, so be sure you enter your email address correctly, then be on the lookout for your gift card!

The Alarm.com Demand Response Program will continue expansion in the next month, as new members will join the program. Delaware Electric Co-Op, Wabash Valley Power Alliance, Duke Energy in Indiana, and Magic Valley Electric Cooperative will all be joining within a month's time from now.

If you are not familiar with the Alarm.com Give Back, Get Back Program, it is a demand response program that helps mitigate high demand for electricity during periods of peak usage, while simultaneously offering financial incentives to electric company customers. Many Alarm.com users who are also customers of participatory electric companies have used the Give Back, Get Back Program to save money, while also helping electricity providers more effectively load-balance through peak demand periods.

The way that a demand response program like the Alarm.com Give Back, Get Back Program works is that an electric company customer will give their electricity provider permission to drop or reduce electrical flow into their associated home or business at the electricity provider's discretion. In exchange, the electric provider will offer incentives to the customer, such as bill credits, reductions or discounts on their monthly bills, or even financial payments or gift cards.

Although the electricity provider can drop or reduce the electrical supply to a participating party at any time at their own discretion, the typical practice is to only do so during peak periods of the heaviest usage. For example, a user may expect the program to go into effect on a hot summer afternoon, during which all households and businesses are actively running their AC systems. Most participants do not notice any changes from such programs, and they are a great way for users to save a little bit more money on their energy bills.

In the case of the Alarm.com Give Back, Get Back Program, an Alarm.com user is giving permission to their electric company to offset power through their smart thermostat as a means of reducing strain on the grid. To participate, an individual must be an Alarm.com user who is also a customer of a participating electric company. Additionally, they must own a compatible smart thermostat device that is integrated with their Alarm.com account. The incentives for enrolling in the Alarm.com Give Back, Get Back Program vary, depending upon the user's electricity provider.

Within the next month from now, four (4) new electric companies will be joining the Alarm.com Give Back, Get Back Program. Delaware Electric Co-Op, Wabash Valley Power Alliance, and Duke Energy of Indiana will be joining the program in Mid-June, while Magic Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC) will be joining in early July. The incentives for opting into the Alarm.com Give Back, Get Back Program are as follows:

  • Delaware Electric Co-Op - Participants who enroll by September 30th will receive a $25 credit towards their electric bills, plus a $5 bill credit for each summer month in which they participate and remain enrolled in the program.
  • Wabash Valley Power Alliance - Participants who join will receive a one-time $50 payment, plus a $25 ongoing seasonal credit.
  • Duke Energy (Indiana) - Participants who join will receive a one-time $75 e-gift card upon enrollment, plus a $25 e-gift card for each year they participate in the program.
  • MVEC - Participants will receive a one-time $50 credit upon enrolling in the program, in addition to a 10% reduction on their electric bills during the summer months on all subsequent years.

If you are a customer of any of the aforementioned electricity providers, or any other participating provider, and you are also an Alarm.com user with at least one (1) smart thermostat set up with your Alarm.com network, then you are eligible to join the program. Any user looking to get started should log in to their Alarm.com account using a compatible web browser, click on the > arrow inside the Thermostats Card, then the "Give Back, Get Back" option, and then Settings and Notifications.

We have learned that Alectra Utilities of Ontario, Canada is the latest partner of the Alarm.com Give Back, Get Back Demand Response Program. This is a great way for customers of Alectra Utilities to save money on their energy bills, especially through the upcoming summer season.

If you aren't familiar with the Alarm.com Give Back, Get Back Program, it serves as a way to mitigate electrical demands during peak use periods, while also providing financial incentives to customers. The service typically goes into effect on the hottest days of the year when virtually everyone is running their air conditioning units to at least some degree. Alectra Utilities is the latest of many ADC Give Back, Get Back partners, including Baltimore Gas & Electric, Los Angeles Department of Water & Power, and more.

Customers of Alectra Utilities who enroll in the program are giving Alectra consent to offset their smart thermostat during peak hours in an effort to reduce the strain on the power grid. Alectra may also intentionally lower the temperature first, before anticipated peak use periods, to more effectively sustain user comfort once the peak usage period is in effect and the setpoint temperature is increased.

In exchange for their participation, users are eligible for special incentives and savings from Alectra. Additionally, everyone who enrolls in the service will be automatically entered for a chance to win free electricity service for a year of up to $5,000. Most users of the Alarm.com Give Back, Get Back service have reported that they notice little to no changes when the program is in effect.

Participants are promised to receive advanced notice of any peak use periods in which their thermostat temperature may be offset. There are typically between six (6) and ten (10) of these temperature offset events per summer season. Please note that participants have the opportunity to opt-out of any single peak use period, or the entire program at any time. However, by opting-out, the participant will forfeit their right to any associated savings and/or incentives.

Any Alectra Utilities customer with Alarm.com service is eligible for the program. You just need to have at least (1) smart thermostat set up with your Alarm.com account. This doesn't necessarily have to be an Alarm.com Thermostat, but the Alarm.com ADC-T3000 Z-Wave Plus Thermostat is a great option if you are looking for a model to use with your Alarm.com service.

Upgrading the 2GIG GC2 to LTE

I show you how to upgrade the 2GIG GC2 to LTE. There are two (2) LTE communicators currently available for the 2GIG GC2. These are the 2GIG LTEA-A-GC2 AT&T LTE Communicator and the 2GIG LTEV1-A-GC2 Verizon LTE Communicator. Upgrading to LTE involves removing the system's old 3G or CDMA communicator and installing a new LTE module in its place. It is very important that you do this before the 3G Sunset to prevent any disruption to your monitoring service.


Installing a Cellular Communicator Into a 2GIG GC2e

I show you how to install a cellular communicator inside of a 2GIG GC2e. The 2GIG GC2e Security System does not come with any available communication path by default. You must add a cellular communicator to get the GC2e monitored. The communicator will connect the system with the Alarm.com servers. Alarm.com then forwards important information, such as alarm events and system trouble conditions to a central monitoring station and/or the end user directly via text message and/or email.

ADC-T2000 and ADC-T3000 Thermostats Work with Alarm.com

I explain how you can use the Alarm.com ADC-T2000 Thermostat and Alarm.com ADC-T3000 Thermostat with the Alarm.com interactive platform. Both the ADC-T2000 and ADC-T3000 are Z-Wave Plus thermostats that pair with virtually any Z-Wave controller or hub. If that Z-Wave hub also happens to be an Alarm.com Security System that is actively being monitored, then the thermostat will be automatically pushed over to the Alarm.com platform after it has been enrolled with the system and the system syncs with Alarm.com.


Adding the ADC-T2000 to an Alarm.com Account

I show you how to pair the Alarm.com ADC-T2000 Thermostat with your Alarm.com account. The ADC-T2000 is a Z-Wave device. Like most Z-Wave devices, when you pair it with your Alarm.com Security System, the device will be automatically pushed over to your Alarm.com account the next time that your alarm system performs an automation sync with the server. You will then be able to control the thermostat remotely through the Alarm.com website and mobile app and include it with Alarm.com Smart Scenes.

Welcome to the second Alarm Grid video recap of 2021. It has been awhile since our first recap of the year, but we really hope to make this a regular thing like it was before. Technical difficulties have slowed us down, but we're going to be back in the swing of things very soon!


Only two (2) new Alarm Grid videos were uploaded in the past week, both of them on Monday, February 15th. They cover the Alarm.com ADC-T2000 Thermostat and the DSC PG9905 Temperature Sensor, respectively. Both videos featured myself as the actor. We hope to have our other video stars back as soon as possible, but it looks like you may have to settle with just me for the foreseeable future. Expect more videos coming really soon. Setting an ADC-T2000 Back to Factory Default

I show you how to restore an Alarm.com ADC-T2000 Z-Wave Plus Thermostat to its factory default settings. All settings and configurations for the thermostat will be set to the same values as when the device was brand-new and fresh out of the package. You normally only factory default the ADC-T2000 Thermostat if you are selling it or giving it away to someone else. You may also perform a factory reset as a last-resort troubleshooting step if nothing else seems to fix an issue.


Programming DSC PG9905 to Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus

I show you how to program the DSC PG9905 Temperature Sensor to a Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus Alarm System. If your IQ Panel 2 Plus System is monitored with access to Alarm.com, then you can receive alerts for when your PG9905 Sensor is activated. However, if you set up the zone so that reports are sent out for Alarm.com alerts, then you will only be able to configure the PG9905 zone for either high temperature or low temperature alerts. The only way you can have a single PG9905 alert the system for both high and low temperatures is if you set the zone so that it does not report out to Alarm.com. Any temperature thresholds can be adjusted on the system as desired.

About a month ago, Alarm.com started a special demand response program for Baltimore Gas & Electric customers who use Alarm.com for smart thermostat control. We are now proud to say that a similar cost-savings program is now open to customers of LA Dept. of Water & Power (LADWP).


Demand response programs, such as the one between ADC and LADWP, are designed to help mitigate demand for electricity during peak hours. Alarm.com customers who enroll in this new program can earn valuable rewards, including credits that go towards their energy bills. These savings will be in addition to the cost-saving benefits of owning a smart thermostat in the first place. This program is virtually identical to the previous partnership between Alarm.com and Baltimore Gas & Electric, which you can read about here.

By enrolling in this program, you will be allowing LADWP to make small temperature adjustments to any smart thermostat that has been enrolled with your Alarm.com account. These temperature adjustments are expected to be very small and only occur during peak demand hours, such as during a hot summer afternoon, when nearly everyone is expected to be running an AC system. This program is completely optional, and no additional equipment is required. You just need to be both an LADWP customer and an Alarm.com customer with a smart thermostat enrolled on your system.

All Alarm.com customers who use one or more smart thermostat devices with their accounts should soon be receiving a notification about this new programming through both the Alarm.com website and mobile app sometime in the near future. Baltimore Gas & Electric is now allowing their customers who use Alarm.com for smart thermostat control to sign-up for a demand response program that will enable them to earn credits toward their bills. The free program can help BGE customers save money and preserve natural resources.


The BGE program is designed to curb demand for electricity during peak hours. By participating in the program, BGE customers can earn credits that will help them save money on their energy costs. This is in addition to the savings presented from owning a smart thermostat and programming it to match the needs of your lifestyle. The program is optional, though anyone looking to save money can greatly benefit. No new equipment needs to be installed, making it super easy for Alarm.com users with BGE service to get started.

Upon enrolling, an end user will be giving permission to BGE to make small temperature adjustments to their thermostats. These adjustments should be very small and only occur during peak hours of electrical consumption. An example would be during a hot summer day when virtually everyone is simultaneously running their air conditioning systems. This will allow BGE to more effectively manage the distribution of electricity, prevent cost spikes for their customers, and delay the need for new power plants.

Alarm.com users should soon receive notification of the program through both the Alarm.com Mobile App and the Alarm.com Website. The notification will provide instructions for getting started. Please note that this program is available only for BGE customers who use ADC for thermostat control. If you are not with BGE, then check with your utility provider to see if any special rebates or demand response programs are available for you. Such programs are a great way to save money and manage resources more effectively.
